Some Thoughts...

How long will it take...?

Posted on June 9, 2017 at 8:35 AM

I decided to write again after a long time because I keep getting asked these questions: "How long will it take to learn the Alexander Technique?" or "How long will it take for the pain to go away?"

How long will it take someone to learn a new language? Do all people learn in the same way and at the same pace? How long will it take for you to learn to play a musical instrument? How long will you need to be in psychotherapy for in order to get the results you want?

Everything we go through in life - mentally, emotionally and physically - stays in our bodies as muscular tension which we carry throughout our lives but remains mostly unnoticed. This tension results in detrimental habits like compression, restriction and misuse occurring in various areas of the body.

So let's start with the first question: "How long will it take for the pain to go away?" The reason I can't give you a clear answer to this question is because there are so many factors involved: What kind of habits do you have? How long have they been there for? (Pain is not an indication of how long the habits have been there, because the excess tension in the body is there for some time before the pain sets in). How attached are you to your habits? How open to change are you? What are you not willing to let go of? What are you doing in your everyday life that's exacerbating your condition and how often and for what length of time are you doing it for? How fast do you learn? Are you facilitating your learning in your everyday life? With all these factors in mind (and others that I might have overlooked at this moment), can I possibly have a specific answer to your question?

My heart goes out to anyone who is suffering with pain right now. I've had my fair share of pain - neck pain, tension headaches, lower back pain and emotional pain. When all else failed to improved my condition, I came across the Alexander Technique and it was the only thing that had a lasting impact on my condition. It has totally changed my life and I know it can do the same for you.

Remember, the Alexander Technique is not a series of healing sessions. It is a series of LESSONS where you learn to direct the body by clear intention of the mind. This learning process results in releasing the unnecessary and debilitating muscular tension and in overcoming physical and emotional pain (among other things). If you're looking to be passively fixed, then you're missing the point.

The Alexander Technique is not a quick-fix. It's not about just getting rid of symptoms but, more importantly, it's about getting to the root cause of the condition. Even though in some of my students the pain went away or was significantly reduced after the first 1-2 lessons, in most cases it takes much longer than that. We are looking to reverse habits that may have been there for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years or more!

"How long does it take to learn the Technique?"  I have some bad news and some good news: The bad news is that the Alexander Technique is endless. The good news is that the Alexander Technique is endless! Yes, it is, and it keeps getting better and better as you progress. It goes deeper and deeper and you discover wonderful things. It's not only about getting rid of pain. Some people will have lessons until their pain goes away. Others will come for lessons for a long time, even though they have no painful condition, because they want to have other benefits like greater ease and freedom of movement, improved balance and coordination, reduced stress and anxiety, improved breathing, sleep, posture and poise, increased self awareness, etc. and, most importantly, because they enjoy the journey...
